Blush peony-shaped garden roses form the heart of the design, their full, ruffled petals doing the same visual work peonies once did before the season ended. Around them, fragrant white garden roses and clusters of delicate spray peony roses add depth and softness. Layers of snow-white hydrangea, fragrant matthiola, and architectural snapdragon stems bring texture, height, and a light, natural scent. Selected carnations tuck in throughout for smooth color transitions from blush to white. The whole piece sits in a white-washed woven basket with a built-in nutrient reservoir, so it arrives ready to display and needs no extra care for several days.

Botanical Insight

The large, ruffled blooms doing most of the visual work here are garden roses bred specifically for their full, peony-like form, sometimes called David Austin-style roses. Unlike a standard rose with a tight, spiraled center, these varieties open into dozens of loosely layered petals that mimic the lush fullness of a peony bloom. Because true peonies are only available for a short window each spring, florists rely on these peony-shaped garden roses the rest of the year to recreate the same romantic, garden-grown look. They also tend to hold up better in transit and last longer once arranged, since garden roses are bred with sturdier stems and petals than most peony varieties.
